Theme 2: Fashion/Shoes - Comparisons: A Modern Twist on a Classic

From the beginning of this course there was one image I wanted to shoot following inspiration from Horst P Horst and below is the result:

Being on location as opposed to being in a studio has introduced a number of different elements, some may say causing more distraction in the composition, however in my head used the barred gate I wanted to take the sexiness of the image and give it almost a Chicago twist to contrast with the model and set a scene, creating almost a story behind it.  If I was to take this shot again I may choose to do it in the studio and play a little more, for instance I also see this shot in black and white possibly with red shoes showing as the only colour in the shot.

However overall I am pleased, I like the tones in the shot and the modern twist to the type of dress my model is wearing, although Horst P Horsts image for me has true class and despite no props for setting a scene has real feel of the rock and roll era about it or maybe even earlier.

Fashion Photographer - David Ruiz

Biography:

Again a photography I know very little about but who I stumbled across while reading Look magazine.  All I know is that he was born in Barcelona and is a fashion, portrait and music photographer.  Below are some of the images I like and why.

I love the colours and textures in this image and on the background of the dark green spring colours of the grass the model in cream and the bag are visible as the main focal points bringing the clothing and accessories to the forefront which is crucial when advertising clothing.
The colour in this image is interesting almost setting a theme for a colder time of year to promote the clothing the model is wearing, you are also drawn into the image by the models eyes.  The tree in this image not only adds texture but having the model follow the shape of the tree gives a sense that the model is comfortable and joins the model with her surroundings.
This image is all about texture with the heather providing a bright green to the image enabling the brown of the shoes to stand out. The perspective of this image from above allows for the detail of the shoes to be seen as opposed to taking the shot from ground level.

This image is great, with very little in the composition it seems to have a real personality while the hedge in the background adds texture the chair sets the theme for the shoes as well as acting like a frame. The style of the chair almost allows the viewer to imagine the type of person who might wear these boots.  The lighting is also interesting in that it almost spotlights on the boots while the depth of field is quite shallow making the boots the key focal points while the hedge is blurred in the background.

Similar to the image above the chairs frame the products while also giving symmetry to the composition of this image, while the hedge in the background adds texture and colour.

Interesting for a product type shot that with the colours in the painting the shoes do not really stand out from this shot.  However the composition is interesting in that the painting gives an insight into the place these type of shoes might be worn.

I like the way that the colour in this image comes only from the shoe, drawing instant attention to the object while the feet of what seems to be a stool frame the shoe in the left hand third of the composition and the carpet adds a slight texture.  The lines of the stool legs also draw the eye down to the shoe being the focal point of this shot.
